Untapped Books & Café @untappedwilliamsburg â July 14
Donât sweat it! Weâve got cold A/C and hot, hearty meals. You know you want to see what Parkerâs got cooking in the kitchen today! #Breakfastchili #yummy #Williamsburg
Parker crossed his arms over his chest. âWeâll figure something out. No way can you leave on Wednesday,â he said. Like me, Parker had a slight build. He did not look intimidating, even when he scowled and brandished one of his enormous chefâs knives at anyone who wandered into his kitchen if they didnât belong.
âI know, it sucks.â
âIt more than sucks,â he replied. âWednesdayâs my birthday. Iâm planning a little get-together and I thought youâd join us. Thereâs a new Italian café over on Montrose that Iâve been dying to try. I heard they have a terrific crab and goat cheese ravioli, and they make a divine Limoncello cake.â
âOh no, Parker. I didnât know your birthday was coming up. My aunt could not have worse timing.â
âCanât you convince her to let you stick around for a few more days?â
âI already tried,â I told him. âSheâs not used to having someone sharing her space. I think she wanted me out yesterday but is too Southern to say so. If I canât find something fast, Iâm not gonna have much of a choice.â
âCome crash with me until you can find your own place,â he urged.
âThanks for the offer, but youâve told me horror stories about your apartment, remember? The cockroaches the size of dinner plates?â I held my hands out a foot apart. âWhat did you name them, again?â
âRandy and Jose,â he said.
âAnd donât you have like a dozen roommates?â
âTwo. Only two. But Suz is hardly ever home and Tonyâs real quiet. Sometimes I forget heâs even there.â
âYouâre awful sweet, but Iâm pretty sure your roommates donât want another person in the apartment. Besides, what would Hazel think?â It broke my heart to have to leave Brooklyn, but I couldnât imagine putting up with the kind of living arrangements all my friends seemed to take for granted.
âHazel wouldnât mind. But youâre right, my roomies would,â he assured me. âWeâre packed in like sardines as it is.â
âNothing is set in stone yet,â I assured him. âIâve still got a few days to come up with something, and Izzy said she could find us something. I donât know if she can do so on such short notice, but sheâs surprised me before.â
âThatâs the spirit,â he said with a wide grin. âHey, how about we go try that Limoncello cake right now? We can pretend itâs my birthday today.â
âIâd love to, but youâre working, and Iâve got plans with Izzy. Another time. Promise.â
I had seventy-two hours to come up with an affordable place to live in Brooklyn, not to mention solving Vickieâs murder. I had enough on my plate, but Parkerâs birthday celebration needed to be more than a dinner with a few friends. Who didnât love a surprise birthday party? I could arrange the whole thing, with Izzyâs help. She was the absolute bomb at throwing parties.
